Three ways to train your dog

Not sure which fits? Describe your dog in the request and the trainer will help you decide.

Board and train

Your dog stays with a trainer and learns while you are away. You learn how to keep it going at pickup.

How it works

From request to trainer in three steps

K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.

1. Tell us what you need

Share your dog's age and breed, whether you want board and train, 1-on-1 sessions or virtual training (Florida only for now), and where you live. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

2. We match you with a trainer

K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who offers it.

3. The trainer calls you back

The trainer calls you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.

Which format fits your dog?

The right choice depends on your dog, your schedule and how involved you want to be.

FormatBest forYour involvement
Board and trainBusy owners, stubborn habits, a head start on foundationsYou learn the handling at pickup and keep it up at home
1-on-1 sessionsLearning to handle your dog yourself, behavior problems, puppiesYou attend every session and do the homework
Virtual trainingFoundations and everyday manners from home, flexible schedulesYou run each exercise on camera while the trainer coaches you

Many owners combine formats, for example a board-and-train program followed by a few 1-on-1 sessions to make the transition home smooth.

How to pick a dog trainer

Dog training is not a licensed profession in most places, so experience and methods vary. Questions worth asking any trainer in your area:

  • What methods and tools do you use, and why? Can I watch a session?
  • What experience do you have with my dog's age, breed or problem?
  • What does the program cost, what is included and how many sessions do I get? Please put it in writing.
  • Are you insured, and what happens if my dog needs more help than planned?
  • For board and train: can I see where my dog will stay, how often will I get updates and do I get lessons at pickup?

Be careful with anyone who guarantees results or will not let you see how they work.

How we match you with a trainer

K9PN is not a franchise and not a directory where anyone can pay to be listed. We refer dog owners to experienced, independent trainers, and we look at the things that decide whether training works in real life:

  • Real experience. How long the trainer has worked with dogs, what kinds of dogs and problems, and whether the person who trains your dog is the experienced trainer or a junior hire.
  • Where your dog actually lives. A dog that spends the program in a crowded kennel room or a stack of crates does not learn to settle in a normal home. We favor trainers who keep few dogs and train in realistic settings.
  • Training in the real world. Walks, public places, visitors and house rules, not only drills in one room.
  • You are part of it. Lessons at pickup and follow-up, so the results last once your dog is home.

Common questions

How does K9PN work?

You fill out a short form about your dog, the kind of training you want and your location. K9PN passes the request to a trainer who offers it and serves your area, and the trainer contacts you to talk about your goals, pricing and scheduling.

Is K9PN a dog training company?

No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer we work with who offers the kind of training you asked for and serves your area. It costs you nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with the trainer who calls you.

Does it cost anything to send a request?

No. Sending a request is free. You pay the trainer you choose to work with, at the prices that trainer sets.

What if my city is not listed?

Send a request anyway and include your city or ZIP code. Virtual training is currently available to Florida residents only, and we will tell you if we cannot match you with an in-person trainer yet.
