For veterans

Veterans: how to become a dog trainer after service

Service builds discipline, steadiness under pressure and the habit of following a plan, and all three carry into dog training. K9PN teaches veterans and separating service members the civilian side of the work, then sets up the website and CRM so you launch ready for clients.

What you get

A civilian dog training career, mapped from where you stand

Whether you handled working dogs in service or have never trained a dog, we start from your own experience.

Your experience, translated

We work out which of your skills clients will pay for and which you still need to learn, so you are not starting from zero.

Coaching people, not just dogs

Pet training is mostly teaching owners. We show you how to run lessons, set homework and keep clients on track.

A specialty that fits you

Obedience, behavior, board and train, working dogs, or sport and protection work. We help you pick where local demand is.

Certification, explained

Whether you need one, what the programs ask for and how to use credentials to earn client trust.

Business setup

Registration, insurance, pricing and a one-page plan in place before your first paying client.

A website and CRM from day one

A site built for your area and a CRM that captures and follows up every inquiry. Part of the Website + CRM package.

Does military service help you become a dog trainer?

It can. Reliability, consistency and calm under pressure are what clients notice in a trainer, and many veterans already have them. Handling experience, including time with military working dogs, gives you a head start on the hands-on side. It does not replace learning to coach pet owners, which is most of the job, so we teach that part directly.

Benefits and transition programs to look into

Your options depend on your service status, so check each program on its official site. Active-duty members in their last 180 days of service may be able to train with an approved industry partner through DoD SkillBridge, with command approval. Veterans with a service-connected disability who are enrolled in VR&E can ask about its self-employment track, which helps with a business plan and training in operations, marketing and finances. Education benefits such as the GI Bill generally apply only to programs the VA has approved, so confirm approval with the VA before you pay for any training, ours included.

Who teaches it

K9PN was founded by Mike Leal, a dog trainer (see about the founder). You learn the path from someone who has built and run a training business, not from a course that stops at the lesson.

Plan the business before the first client

Veterans who do well here treat the launch like a mission plan: services, prices, costs and where the first clients come from, written down before anything is spent. Our guide to starting a dog training business walks through it, and pricing and insurance basics cover the two things new trainers most often leave late. K9PN then builds the CRM and website. See the Website + CRM package.

How it works

  1. Book a call and tell us your service background, when you separate and where you want to work.
  2. We map what transfers from your experience and what to learn next, in order.
  3. You build hands-on experience with our guidance.
  4. We set up your website, CRM and follow-up so you launch with systems already running.

Common questions

Can a veteran become a dog trainer with no dog training experience?

Yes. Dog training is unregulated in most of the United States, so owners hire the trainer they trust. K9PN teaches the process and sets up the systems, and you build hands-on hours with guidance.

Does military working dog handler experience count?

It is real hands-on experience and a strong start, especially for obedience and working-dog specialties. Pet owners also need a trainer who can coach people, so we add that skill.

Can I use the GI Bill to pay for dog trainer training?

The GI Bill generally pays only for programs the VA has approved. Ask the VA about your own eligibility and about any specific program before you enroll or pay.

What is DoD SkillBridge?

A Department of Defense program that lets eligible service members train with approved industry partners during their last 180 days of service, with command approval. Check the official SkillBridge site for current partners and rules.

Can I train service dogs for other veterans?

Many veterans are drawn to this. Start with the same foundation as any trainer, then specialize under an experienced service dog trainer. Rules differ by state and country, and K9PN does not certify service dogs, so check the requirements where you work.

How much does it cost to learn with K9PN?

It is scoped on a call, based on where you are starting and what you want to set up. Book a call and we will lay out the options.
