Reactive Dog Training: What Actually Works

Lunging and barking on walks is stressful. Here is what reactivity is and the approach that helps.

A reactive dog overreacts to certain triggers, such as other dogs, strangers, bikes or noises. The reaction can look like barking, lunging or freezing. It is usually driven by fear, frustration or overexcitement, not by being a bad dog.

Reactivity is not always aggression

Many reactive dogs want distance rather than a fight. Aggression involves intent to harm and carries a higher risk, so if your dog has bitten or you are worried about safety, get a qualified professional involved in person.

Start with the vet

Pain and medical problems can make dogs reactive. A check-up rules these out and can lead to useful options if anxiety is part of the picture.

What helps

  • Distance. Work below the point where your dog reacts. Closer is not braver.
  • Counter-conditioning. Pair the trigger at a safe distance with something your dog loves so the feeling changes over time.
  • Clear exits. Teach a calm U-turn so you can leave any situation quickly.
  • Management. Avoid triggers you cannot control while training goes on.
  • Muzzle training. Taught positively, a muzzle is a safety tool, not a punishment.

What to avoid

Punishing growling or barking can suppress the warning without fixing the cause, which makes dogs less predictable. Flooding a dog with the trigger usually makes things worse.
