How it works

From request to trainer in three steps

K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.

1. Tell us what you need

Share your dog's age and breed, whether you want board and train, 1-on-1 sessions or virtual training (Florida only for now), and where you live. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

2. We match you with a trainer

K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who offers it.

3. The trainer calls you back

The trainer calls you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.

What to work on first

  • Potty training. A schedule, a spot and consistent praise.
  • Crate training. A safe place to rest, never a punishment.
  • Biting and chewing. Redirect to toys and end play calmly when teeth touch skin.
  • Handling. Gentle touching of paws, ears and mouth for vet and grooming visits.
  • Recall and leash. Short, fun lessons that build a habit of coming when called.

Socialization the safe way

Puppies learn quickly about people, places and sounds, and gentle exposure helps them grow into confident dogs. Ask your vet when it is safe to meet other dogs before the vaccine series is complete, and check vaccine requirements before any group class. Most trainers will ask for proof of current vaccines.

1-on-1 lessons or a class?

Private lessons fit the plan to your puppy and your home. Classes add socialization but need vaccines first. Many owners start with private lessons for house rules and add a class later. See the types of dog training compared.

Choosing a puppy trainer

Dog training is not a licensed profession in most places, so experience and methods vary. Questions worth asking any trainer in Knoxville:

  • What methods and tools do you use, and why? Can I watch a session?
  • What experience do you have with my dog's age, breed or problem?
  • What does the program cost, what is included and how many sessions do I get? Please put it in writing.
  • Are you insured, and what happens if my dog needs more help than planned?
  • For board and train: can I see where my dog will stay, how often will I get updates and do I get lessons at pickup?

Be careful with anyone who guarantees results or will not let you see how they work.

How we match you with a trainer

K9PN is not a franchise and not a directory where anyone can pay to be listed. We refer dog owners to experienced, independent trainers, and we look at the things that decide whether training works in real life:

  • Real experience. How long the trainer has worked with dogs, what kinds of dogs and problems, and whether the person who trains your dog is the experienced trainer or a junior hire.
  • Where your dog actually lives. A dog that spends the program in a crowded kennel room or a stack of crates does not learn to settle in a normal home. We favor trainers who keep few dogs and train in realistic settings.
  • Training in the real world. Walks, public places, visitors and house rules, not only drills in one room.
  • You are part of it. Lessons at pickup and follow-up, so the results last once your dog is home.

Common questions

When should I start training my puppy?

Right away. Start with potty routines, crate time and gentle handling, then add short, fun lessons. Check vaccines before group classes.

How do I stop my puppy from biting?

Redirect to a chew toy, end play when teeth touch skin and make sure the puppy gets enough sleep and exercise.

How long does potty training take?

It varies by puppy, age and how consistent the routine is. Many puppies improve over weeks to a few months. A schedule and supervision help most.

Is board and train good for a puppy?

Some trainers offer puppy programs, but many owners start with 1-on-1 lessons so they learn the routines. Ask the trainer what is best for your puppy's age.

Is K9PN a dog training company?

No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer we work with who offers the kind of training you asked for and serves your area. It costs you nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with the trainer who calls you.
