How it works

From request to trainer in three steps

K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.

1. Tell us what you need

Share your dog's age and breed, whether you want board and train, 1-on-1 sessions or virtual training (Florida only for now), and where you live. It takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

2. We match you with a trainer

K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who offers it.

3. The trainer calls you back

The trainer calls you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.

It starts with recall

A dog that comes every time you call, even when it is excited, is the foundation. Training begins on a long line in low-distraction places and adds distractions in steps. A dog should be reliable on leash and long line before it is trusted off leash.

What the stages look like

  • Engagement and attention in the house and yard.
  • Recall on a long line with increasing distance and distractions.
  • Place, stay and heel as supporting skills.
  • Practice in new locations with gradual freedom.
  • Maintenance: it is a habit you keep up, not a one-time fix.

Leash laws and safe places

Knoxville and Knox County require dogs to be leashed in public places, and rules differ inside and outside city limits. Check the City’s animal code and Young-Williams Animal Services before you rely on any off-leash plan. Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires a leash of six feet or shorter on the two trails where dogs are allowed.

Board and train for off-leash goals

Longer programs, often six weeks or more, give more time for proofing in new places. Ask how the trainer builds recall and how off-leash work is made safe.

How we match you with a trainer

K9PN is not a franchise and not a directory where anyone can pay to be listed. We refer dog owners to experienced, independent trainers, and we look at the things that decide whether training works in real life:

  • Real experience. How long the trainer has worked with dogs, what kinds of dogs and problems, and whether the person who trains your dog is the experienced trainer or a junior hire.
  • Where your dog actually lives. A dog that spends the program in a crowded kennel room or a stack of crates does not learn to settle in a normal home. We favor trainers who keep few dogs and train in realistic settings.
  • Training in the real world. Walks, public places, visitors and house rules, not only drills in one room.
  • You are part of it. Lessons at pickup and follow-up, so the results last once your dog is home.

Common questions

How long does off-leash training take?

It depends on the dog and the goal. It is usually weeks to months, built in stages after a strong recall on a long line.

Is off-leash training safe?

It can be, when it is built in stages and in safe, legal places. Always follow leash laws and know your dog's limits.

Can any dog be trained off leash?

Many can, but breed, age and temperament matter. A trainer will tell you what is realistic and where the limits are.

Where can I let my dog off leash near Knoxville?

Look for fenced dog parks and private land. Public places generally require a leash, so check the City and County rules.

Is K9PN a dog training company?

No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer we work with who offers the kind of training you asked for and serves your area. It costs you nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with the trainer who calls you.
