How long is board and train in Knoxville, TN?
Good board and train programs usually run about four to six weeks. Here is why, what the time is used for and how to tell when a program is too short.
- Free to request, takes about two minutes
- Board and train or 1-on-1 lessons
- A trainer calls you back
From request to trainer in three steps
K9PN is a referral service. We do not train dogs. Trainers set their own prices and programs.
K9PN is a referral service. Based on what you need and where you live, we refer your request to a professional trainer who offers it.
The trainer calls you to talk through your goals, pricing and scheduling. You decide whether it is a fit.
Why not a one-, two- or three-week camp
Learning a behavior and relying on it are different things. A dog needs time to learn a skill, practice it around distractions and in new places, and turn it into a habit. You also need time to learn how to handle the dog, because results only last if you keep them up. For most dogs, a few weeks is not enough for all of that.
What happens during the program
- Evaluation and plan. The trainer learns about your dog and goals and sets a plan.
- Foundations. Structure, boundaries, engagement and basic obedience: sit, down, place, heel and recall.
- Proofing. Skills are practiced around distractions and in different places until they hold.
- Training for you. You learn the commands, timing and routines so your dog responds to you, not only the trainer, and you get follow-up guidance.
Four weeks or six weeks?
Four weeks suits many dogs that need solid manners, leash skills and obedience. Six weeks gives more time for bigger challenges or higher goals, such as reliable off-leash control or deeper behavior work. Serious behavior cases may need longer. The trainer will recommend a length after learning about your dog.
What to ask about the schedule
- How many weeks, and what happens in each?
- When do I get updates, and in what form?
- Do I get lessons at pickup, and for how long?
- What follow-up support is included after pickup?
- How many other dogs are in the program, and where does mine sleep?
How we match you with a trainer
K9PN is not a franchise and not a directory where anyone can pay to be listed. We refer dog owners to experienced, independent trainers, and we look at the things that decide whether training works in real life:
- Real experience. How long the trainer has worked with dogs, what kinds of dogs and problems, and whether the person who trains your dog is the experienced trainer or a junior hire.
- Where your dog actually lives. A dog that spends the program in a crowded kennel room or a stack of crates does not learn to settle in a normal home. We favor trainers who keep few dogs and train in realistic settings.
- Training in the real world. Walks, public places, visitors and house rules, not only drills in one room.
- You are part of it. Lessons at pickup and follow-up, so the results last once your dog is home.

Common questions
How long is board and train?
Good programs usually run four to six weeks, depending on your dog and goals. The trainer will recommend a length after learning about your dog.
Is a two-week board and train enough?
For most dogs, no. A dog needs time to learn, practice around distractions and form habits, and you need time to learn the handling.
Can my dog stay longer than six weeks?
Some behavior cases need more time. Ask the trainer how extra weeks work and what they cost before you start.
What happens after board and train ends?
You get lessons at pickup and, ideally, follow-up support. Keep the same rules at home so the training holds.
Is K9PN a dog training company?
No. K9PN is a referral service and does not train dogs. We pass your request to a professional trainer we work with who offers the kind of training you asked for and serves your area. It costs you nothing to send a request, and you decide whether to work with the trainer who calls you.
