Family Dog or Protection Dog? How to Decide

Do you need a protection dog, or would a well-trained family dog and good home security do the job?

Many people shopping for protection are really looking for peace of mind. Before choosing a dog bred and trained for protection, it helps to be honest about what you need.

What a family dog gives you

A well-trained family dog is a companion first. Barking at the door and being a visible presence deter many opportunists, and a dog you can safely have around children and guests is easier to live with. See our guide to pet dogs for sale.

What a protection dog asks of you

  • Ongoing training for both dog and handler, not a one-off course
  • Time and exercise for a high-drive working dog
  • Socialization and control so the dog is calm and reliable around people
  • Legal and insurance responsibility if something goes wrong

Questions to ask yourself

  • Do I have the time and willingness to train every week?
  • Do children, visitors or other pets live with me?
  • Would an alarm system, cameras and lighting meet my actual need?
  • Am I comfortable with the legal responsibility?

The middle ground

Some households choose a family protection dog: a stable, trained dog with a strong bond to the family and a protective instinct, but no aggression training. See our guides to family protection dogs and guard dogs for sale.
